“I can’t think of another alto saxophonist with a sound quite like Sam Braysher’s” ****

Dave Gelly, The Observer

“Braysher’s cool, modernist twist on old songs is just superb”

Simon Adams, Jazz Journal

“Trying to second-guess a long-gone composer’s intention is a risky exercise, and jazz improvisers usually exercise a free hand in interpreting the Great American Songbook. But the warm-toned young London saxophonist Sam Braysher is a prize-winning investigator of the early recordings and published music of Jerome Kern, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and many others, and imagines a new jazz closely attuned to an old world.”

John Fordham, the Guardian

That’s Him: the Music of Kurt Weill (2024)

Featuring an all-star London rhythm section and special guest vocalist Sara Dowling, That’s Him: The Music of Kurt Weill showcases lesser known works by the fascinating German-American composer, whose songs straddle the worlds of jazz, European classical music, musical theatre and opera.

Dance Little Lady, Dance Little Man (2021)

This trio album features legendary Catalan drummer Jorge Rossy, who is best known for his work with Brad Mehldau’s trio, and charismatic London bassist Tom Farmer (EMPIRICAL, Anoushka Shankar). Braysher presents fun and swinging arrangements of a number of tunes that, whilst rarely played by jazz musicians, are familiar to the collective ear, ranging from Dexter Gordon to Disney via Hoagy Carmichael, and one characterful original composition.

“A triumph of intelligence and sentiment from all in this subtly stand-out recording, with a deceptive simplicity that reveals new depths with each listen.”
Eddie Myer, Jazzwise
“They’re a world-class rhythm section and the three together work magic. Braysher himself constantly surprises… Whatever he plays, he thinks about carefully, making each solo an excursion of great interest, never overloading sentiment or false emotion but always staying true to the song.”
Simon Adams, Jazz Journal

Golden Earrings (2017)

Released on the iconic Spanish label Fresh Sound New Talent, Golden Earrings sees Sam playing in an intimate duo setting with acclaimed New York pianist and master accompanist Michael Kanan. The repertoire includes Ellington’s “All Too Soon”, Arthur Schwartz’s “Dancing in the Dark”, Charlie Parker’s “Cardboard” and a nod to Lester Young on “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans”.

“delightful and surprising” Dave Gelly, The Observer
